Ann-Sofi Sidén

1962EstocolmoSuécia

Ann-Sofi Sidén (1962, Stockholm, Sweden) has a relevant track record in the generation of artists in the 1980s, who developed an anti-formalist approach to the visual arts. Making use of a diversity of disciplines such as performance, image sculpture and video, Sidén suggests to the viewer a cinematic and alternative experience of reality, when dealing with subjects such as vulnerability, control, violence, and surveillance.

She studied at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, Germany, between 1986 and 1988, and at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm, between 1988 and 1992. She did residencies at Atelier Augarten, Vienna, Austria (2003); PS1, New York, USA (1993-94); Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine, USA (1989).

Sidén, who began by dedicating herself to painting, expanded her practice to journalism, cinema and scientific research, materialized in sculptural installations or spatial video art, which seem to belong to a political, economic or social system. She has received several awards, such as Dagens Nyheter's Culture Prize, Stockholm (2012) and PS.1 International Studioprogram, New York (1993-94), among others.

Among the most relevant solo exhibitions are: 3 MPH, Horse to Rocket, Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea, Santiago de Compostela, Spain (2005); In Between the Best of Worlds, Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2005); Das Neue 2, Atelier Augarten - Zentrum für Zeitgenössische Kunst der Österreichischen Galerie, Vienna (2005); Warte Mal!, Wiener Secession, Vienna, Austria (1999); Ann-Sofi Sidén - EnquêteThe Panning Eye Revisited, ARC Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France (2001) and QM, I think I call her QM, Hirschhorn Museum, Washington (D.C.), USA (2000).
