Conservation
In order to safeguard its collection – one of the best private art collections in Portugal, with international recognition – MACAM has a team specialised in conservation and restoration. This guarantees the appropriate conditions and preventive conservation measures necessary to maintain the cultural assets in its museum collection and other cultural assets in storage.
Standards and procedures
Given the diversity and complexity of materials and techniques used in modern and contemporary works of art, MACAM has a preventive conservation plan that includes standards and procedures to reduce the risk of deterioration and damage to cultural assets.
These standards and procedures include:
- Control of environmental conditions
- Handling and maintenance procedures when packing, transporting and exhibiting works
- Risk analysis
- Preparing for and responding to risk
- Periodic checks on the state of conservation of the works
- Documentation management, keeping assembly instructions, iteration reports and descriptions of complex works up to date

Research
The area of conservation also focuses on the research and study of cultural assets, namely investigating techniques and materials, analysing the causes and processes of deterioration, in order to establish the best conservation measures and define action plans.
Collaborations and Partnerships
Collaborations, partnerships and protocols with artists, institutions and/or universities are contemplated - with the aim of sharing research, developing knowledge, methods and techniques to guarantee the best practices and results in the field of Conservation.
Restoration
There is a restoration studio that supports the maintenance of the museum's collection. Any intervention on cultural assets is carried out by a legally recognised technician.
