Duarte Amaral Netto

Duarte Amaral Netto was born in Lisbon in 1976. He studied photography at AR.CO – Center for Art and Visual Communication between 1996 and 2000 (with the Kodak Scholarship from 1999 to 2000). In 2008, he completed a Postgraduate degree in Visual Culture Theory, and in 2016, he obtained the European Master of Fine Art Photography at IED Madrid with the IED Scholarship.



In 2004, he participated in the first edition of the Photography Course at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He has exhibited regularly, with his first solo exhibition taking place at Módulo in 2002, which was also presented at Galerie Nouvelles Images in The Hague, Netherlands, and at MK Galerie in Rotterdam in 2003.



That same year, he received the Grand Prix du 48ème Salon de Montrouge in Paris. He represented Portugal in the exhibition 100 photos pour l’Europe in Paris and was selected for various festivals and events such as European Nights, Arles (2006); Plat(t)form, Winterthur (2014); and Festival Voies Off, Arles (2018).



In 2012, he was nominated for the 8th Edition of the BES PHOTO Award, with exhibitions at Berardo Museum in Portugal and Pinacoteca de São Paulo in Brazil. In 2021, he directed a short film for the exhibition 14-21 at Galeria Boavista, Lisbon, which was later presented at Indie Brasil and IndieLisboa the following year. He has been a Photography professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar since 2003 and is a co-founder of Hélice and the publication Propeller.
