Edgar Martins
Edgar Martins was born in Évora but grew up in Macau. He has a BA in Photography from the London Institute (University of the Arts), an MA in Photography and Fine Art from the Royal College of Arts (London), and a PhD in Documentary Photography from USW (Cardiff).
Martins has exhibited internationally at institutions such as PS1 MoMA (New York); MOPA (San Diego, USA); MACRO (Rome); Laumeier Sculpture Park (St. Louis, USA); Centro Cultural de Belém (Lisbon); Centro de Arte Moderna de Bragança (Bragança, Portugal); Centro Internacional de Arte José de Guimarães (Guimarães, Portugal); Museu do Oriente (Lisbon); Centro de Arte Moderna (Lisbon); Museu Nacional de Arte Moderna Contemporânea (Lisbon); MAAT (Lisbon); Centro Cultural Hélio Oiticica (Rio de Janeiro); The New Art Gallery Walsall (Walsall, UK); PM Gallery & House (London); Saatchi Gallery (London); Museum of Photography (Dublin); Ffotogallery (Penarth, Wales); The Wolverhampton Art Gallery & Museum (UK); Open Eye Gallery (Liverpool); The New Walk Museum (Leicester); The Southbank Centre (London); UCCA (Beijing); National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul); Centre Culturel Calouste Gulbenkian (Paris), among many others.
Edgar Martins has been awarded the New York Photography Award (Fine Arts category, 2008), the BES Photo (Portugal, 2009), the SONY World Photography Award (2009, 2018, 2023), the International Photography Award (2010, 2023), the Magnum and Lens Culture Art Photography Awards (2018), the Hangar Photo Prize (2020), the BJP 1854 Portrait of Humanity Prize (2020), the Hariban Photography Prize (2023), among others. He was recognised as the Best Photographer in the World 2023 by the Sony World Photography Awards, as well as the Best Photographer working on photographic film in 2023 by the Lucie Foundation.
With numerous publications to date, he was also Macau's representative at the 54th edition of the Venice Biennale.
His work is represented in several public and private collections, including those of Victoria & Albert Museum (London), National Media Museum (Bradford, UK), RIBA (London), MAST (Bologna), Dallas Museum of Art (USA); Museu Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisbon), MAAT (Lisbon), Colecção de Arte Contemporânea do Estado (Portugal), Fondation Carmignac (Paris), among many others.
