Pedro Neves Marques

Pedro Neves Marques was born in Lisbon, in 1984. He is an artist, directs films and writes.  He completed, in 2007, the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Lisbon University and, in 2010, the masters “Art and Politics” at the Goldsmiths University of London. He lived in London, São Paulo, New York and Lisbon. His multiform work weaves narratives that aim to contest colonial persistence and the modern conception of Nature, using real or speculative ideas from the universes of science and science fiction. He received several prizes, such as the 2018 Present Future Art Prize, Artissima (Turin) and the 2021 Future Generation Art Prize, PinchumkArtCentre (Kyiv).



He has had solo exhibitions in institutions such as the CA2M (Madrid), CaixaForum (Barcelona), 1946 (Hague), HighLine, E-flux (New York), Castello di Rivoli (Turin), Gasworks (London), Pérez Art Museum Miami, Galerias Municipais – Cordoaria Nacional, Berardo Collection Museum (Lisbon). His works and films have been shown in institutions such as Tate Modern, Serpentine Galleries Cinema (London), Anthology Film Archives, SculptureCenter (New York), Palais de Tokyo, Jeu de Paume (Paris), Sursock Art Museum (Beiruth) Inside Out Art Museum (Beijing), Antenna Space Gallery (Shanghai), Matadero (Madrid), Serralves Museum (Oporto), MAAT (Lisbon) and in biennials such as Liverpool, Gwangiu, Göteborg, Cuenca or New Museum Triennial.



He directed fiction short movies, the most recent of which opened in 2022 at the Rotterdam Festival, where it received the Ammodo Tiger Short Award. His movies have been presented in international film festivals, such as TIFF and NYFF. With Mariana Silva, he co-founded the inhabitants online video channel, nominated for the 2017 Visible Award. He also published short stories books, anthologies, various articles, he writes poetry and co-founded, with Alice dos Reis, the poetry publisher Livros do Pântano. His work is represented in important collections, including CACE – Portuguese State Collection of Contemporary Art.



In 2022, he represented Portugal at the 59th Venice Biennale, with the film installation Vampires in Space.
