Rodrigo Oliveira
Rodrigo Oliveira (Sintra, 1978) is a Portuguese artist who lives and works in Lisbon. He completed a degree in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon in 2003 and completed an MA in Fine Arts at Chelsea College of Art & Design in London in 2006.
His artistic practice, which is largely experimental, is characterised by a diversity of media, materials and processes. He works with assemblage, collection and improvisation, integrating methods of repetition and serialism, in which colour and space are central elements in his visual language. One of the defining themes of his work is ‘Lusophone Tropicalism,’ explored through the impact of modernist architecture and the legacy of Conceptual Art.
Rodrigo Oliveira addresses contemporary issues such as cultural hybridisation and the relationship between the individual and the collective in a globalised context. By questioning the political, economic and social models that shape today's world, the artist seeks to reconfigure everyday objects, revealing layers of meaning that challenge common perception.
Between 2014 and 2015, he received a grant from the Fundatión Botín in Santander, Spain. Since 2001, he has exhibited regularly in Portugal and abroad, including Utopia/Dystopia Part II, MAAT, Lisbon (2017); Chandigarh Revisited, Le Corbusier Villa Savoye, Paris (2016); Projeto Parede, MAM, São Paulo (2013); A Culpa Não É Minha, Museu Berardo, Lisbon (2010); Coisas de Valor e o Valor das Coisas, Cosmocopa – Arte Contemporânea, Rio de Janeiro (2011); A primeira pedra (e todas as outras mais), MNAC – Lisbon (2011); ResPública 1910 - 2010 face a face, FCG, Lisbon (2010); Eurobuzz, Agorafolly – Europália European Festival, Place de la Chapelle, Brussels, (2007); and There's no place like home, Homestead Gallery, London (2006).
His work is included in public and private collections such as the EDP Foundation, MNAC Fundação PLMJ, Leal Rios Foundation, António Cachola Collection, Figueiredo Ribeiro Collection, Peggy Guggenheim Museum (Venice, Italy), and Dallas & Bob Van Breda Collection (Los Angeles, USA).
