The author of a large body of drawing work, Alexandre Conefrey also works with engraving and photography, always seeking to find the support and techniques that best correspond to the themes in question. The diptych - 'Because I do not hope
' is one of the examples of a series of works in which the artist uses a photographic process known as cibachrome (reproduction of slides on photographic paper) and where, despite the marked difference in support in relation to drawing, Conefrey sometimes uses familiar techniques of blurring and ill-defined outlines that highlight his characteristic style of haunting figuration. In the image on the left we can glimpse two blurred faces, almost abstract. In the image on the right, we see a shape of a full-bodied person, who seems to be hooded, as if caught between the act of chasing or running away.

The images, with no apparent relation, appear as fragments or loose and decontextualised pieces of a narrative to which the spectator has no access, except through an attempt at its reconstruction that can be carried out by combining the clues provided by the artist. In addition to the images themselves and the technique used to work them, the viewer also has a fundamental element in Conefrey's works: the title. A direct reference to a poem by T.S. Eliot (Ash Wednesday) that deals with the origin and the end of all things (from dust to dust), the title sentence ( Because I do not hope ), together with the fact that it is a diptych, points us to a possible path for the analysis/reconstruction of the work: the endless cycles of which existence is made, and the contrasts, ambiguities, and dualities found in it and which perpetuate it, oftentimes past hope.
