Spanish artist Santiago Sierra is known for his controversial practice, the goal of which is to question the limits and constraints imposed by contemporary society. His work is associated with conceptualism and political activism, which the artist materializes into (live) sculpturese, documentation, public events, film projects, and photography that reveal the precariousness of labor and the perversity of power. Sierra uses the art context to highlight the most vulnerable groups of society and the impotence of the economic system and social structures to effectively address corruption and labor exploitation. Sierra recruits marginalized members of society and engages them in pointless labor acts, such as pushing rocks around the gallery, being tattooed, sitting in boxes, or standing in large groups at an exhibition opening, among others. Taking advantage of the power of spectacle and the instruments used by the capitalist system, Sierra scrutinizes the present economic system's inhuman aspects.- Lona Suspendida de la fechada de edificio is a photograph documenting Sierra's intervention on the façade of La Tertulia Museum of Modern Art in Cali, Colombia, where he installed a 20x15m USA flag, which was part of the V Festival de Performance in June 2002. The flag was made by Luis Abel Delgado. Self-taught Delgado is known as one of the best embroiders in the world. His work is tied firmly with military forces, the rule of Augusto Pinochet, and later also the American forces. Making the American occupation of Columbia the point of departure for the work, the intervention concealing a national institution addresses the idea of oppression, cultural concealment, and a nation's invisibility under occupation. The flag was set on fire on the fifth day of the festival.
