Alvaro Lancellotti delves into terreiro songs to present his new album ‘Arruda, Alfazema e Guiné’.
Immersed in the traditions of Umbanda, Brazilian singer-songwriter Alvaro Lancellotti transforms his experiences in the terreiro into the album Arruda, Alfazema e Guiné. The album blends spirituality and music without adhering to a fixed aesthetic, inspired by terreiro songs and the experimental soundscape of Pedro Santos’s Krishnanda (1968). With 12 tracks, the project explores Afro-Brazilian spirituality with freedom and a contemporary sensibility.
The singles “Maneira de Ver” and “A Calma”, the latter featuring Mateus Aleluia, offer a preview of the album and reveal the influence of Os Tincoãs. The songs reflect both spontaneous creative processes and Lancellotti’s admiration for the group’s history, connecting past and present in their musical composition.
Also inspired by albums linked to Afro-Brazilian traditions and by artists such as Bill Withers and Jorge Ben, the album incorporates diverse references into its sound. Guided by the idea of creative freedom, the work features arrangements that evoke the symbolic properties of the herbs that give the album its name, resulting in a sensitive, spiritual and contemporary project.
