Fernanda Maciel
In 2016 she began studying Portuguese guitar at the Fado Museum under the guidance of Professor Antonio Parreira. From then on, she began to visit collectives and fado houses to accompany fado singers.
A frequent figure in Lisbon's fado houses, in 2022 he represented ‘Tasca do Chico’ at the Santa Casa Alfama Festival. He took part in important events in the city of Lisbon such as the opening of Eurovision in 2010 and the inauguration of the Portuguese Guitar Workshop in 2019. In 2020 he took part as a soloist in the ‘11th Calcutta International Classical Guitar Festival’ and is resident guitarist at the ‘Povo Lisboa’ fado house.
She has been part of two fado projects in which the members are women. The first focussed on the musical genre in a more traditional way, ‘As Mariquinhas’, and the other on a more modern approach, ‘Amara Quartet’.
Fernanda Maciel is a Portuguese and Brazilian citizen. She has a degree in Classical Guitar from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and a post-graduate qualification in Musical Sciences from the New University of Lisbon.
Marta Rosa
Born on 14 February 1991 in Alverca do Ribatejo.
In 2004, at the age of 13, she won the 1st youth prize in the ‘Grande Noite do Fado de Lisboa’ competition at the São Luiz Municipal Theatre.
In 2007, she entered the Silva Marques Regional Conservatory in Alhandra, where she completed her singing course under the guidance of teacher and mezzo-soprano Susana Teixeira.
In 2009, she received the ‘Silva Marques’ award from the same institution - a recognition among students and a further incentive for her learning.
In 2010, she won 2nd prize for ‘Maria Severa’ in the ‘Há Fado na Mouraria’ competition at the Trindade Theatre in Lisbon. For the first time, Marta Rosa sang her own lyrics, ‘Metro’, to the melody of João Black's Fado Menor do Porto.
She graduated in Musical Sciences from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in 2013 and in Singing from the Escola Superior de Música do Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa in 2016, in the class of professor and tenor Luís Madureira, with a final exam grade of 19.
In 2019, she won 1st prize in the ‘O Meu Fado’ competition (Rádio SIM) and the recording of her first EP ‘Entretanto’, released in 2020 on digital platforms under the Universal Music Portugal label. Later that year, she founded and joined the project ‘As Mariquinhas’ with Fernanda Maciel, Cláudia Leal and, later, Mara Dulce, an all-female Fado ensemble. They accompanied leading figures such as Maria João Quadros and Florinda Maria.
For a year and a half, she was responsible for coordinating the artistic residencies, scheduling the cast on a daily basis and accompanying the Fado guitar at the Povo Lisboa restaurant in Cais do Sodré.
Fado singer, guitarist, lyricist and composer, Marta Rosa is a multi-talented artist and, against all conventions, one of the few women to write for Fado and play the viola professionally. Together with guitarist Fernanda Maciel, they continue to be one of the first female pairs in activity.
