Guarda-Rios is a three-voiced bird: João Neves, Susana Nunes and Mariana Camacho. Brought together by a shared interest in Portuguese folk music and the free exploration of the voice, these two elements form the foundations of the project. Taking traditional songs as their starting point, they venture into the spontaneous, real-time creation of a cappella vocal arrangements. The result is a living repertoire that evolves organically with each performance.
Together since 2019, they have performed in Esposende, Lisbon, Porto, Funchal, Copenhagen — at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2023 and Vinterjazz 2025 — and Berlin. In 2026, they released the double single Catarina Branco e Guarda-Rios on the Cuca Monga label. They created the sound design for and performed in Sonhos Comuns, a work by Ana Rita Teodoro that premiered at Culturgest in 2025, and collaborated with Mariana Pinto Coelho Dias on the installation Kin Making, presented at CAM – Gulbenkian in 2026.
