Will and desire lie in the freedom of a dive. Running to take off your clothes, almost tripping over tree roots, before diving into the river where the city has no control. From freedom to liberation in the densest waters, we dance and celebrate the possibility of simple things, of unclipped wings, of the last strongholds without a net before the concrete jungle explodes.
Diving in the Cávado celebrates an invigorated bird, a kingfisher in a steep dive, showing us that, for him, the freedom of a river still reigns supreme. It is in him that the simple things of Mother Nature show us that the anchors of the world are still better. If we turn off our mobile data, we can gratefully pay tribute to the dance that the freedom of a dive into the river promises us.
Rivers have always been an inspiration for Homem em Catarse, and the Cávado was the first of them all; ten years later, the first album is celebrated with a new, fresh and danceable version of Mergulho no Cávado, followed by a vinyl reissue of Guarda-Rios. Short but special, Guarda-Rios catapulted Homem em Catarse onto the road and onto an ever-ascending trajectory, very much in keeping with the new Portuguese music of the last decade.
This unique show will take place on 12 December at 9.30 pm at the àCapela of MACAM.
About Homem em Catarse
The alter ego of multi-instrumentalist Afonso Dorido, Homem em Catarse emerged on the prolific and unique “Barcelos scene” around a decade ago. Currently based in Braga, the founder of the post-rock collective indignu has been travelling the roads and paths of this country since 2013 to share his emotional songs. In 2015, the promising Guarda-Rios was released, an album that ended up capturing the initial attention. Two years later, after countless trips to villages, towns and cities in the interior of Portugal, he gathered enough mileage and inspiration to create ‘Viagem Interior’, a concept album that portrays an interesting social and demographic view of the country, accompanied by texts by Portuguese writer José Luís Peixoto. In 2020, weeks before the pandemic, ‘sem palavras | cem palavras’ was released.
