Chamber music is a cornerstone of every musician’s training, but it takes on particular significance at secondary school level. It is during this stage of life that the importance of musical and personal interaction helps to shape the young musician’s character. At the Escola Profissional da Metropolitana (EPM), there are, on average, 19 chamber music groups, ranging from brass quintets, woodwind quintets, large ensembles of brass, flutes, saxophones, clarinets, double basses and percussion, to groups such as piano trios or string quartets. This wide range of educational opportunities is one of the school’s key strengths; thanks to agreements with various organisations, it enables these groups to perform on numerous occasions at leading venues in Lisbon and other locations across the metropolitan area.
