António Júlio Duarte
António Júlio Duarte was born in 1965 in Lisbon, where he lives and works. He studied photography at AR.CO - Escola de Arte e Comunicação Visual in Lisbon between 1985-1989 and at the Royal College of Art in London in 1991.
He began to take photographs in the 1990s, initially shooting only in black and white before introducing colour in the following decade, giving continuity to three major aspects that define his work today: the square image, the photographic series, and his interest in reality. While the first refocuses the problem of the shot and the sequence, the last requires the camera to be selective about the location, its data and experiential circumstances. Close to documentary, his photography denotes a subjective supplement supported by technical resources, which turns the references and situations framed into new sensitive realities.
António Júlio Duarte's CV includes the following solo exhibitions: FEBRE, Museu de Serralves, Porto (2023); CRIATURA, O Armário, Lisbon (2021); Eclipse, Galeria Bruno Múrias, Lisbon (2020); White Noise, Quartel da Arte Contemporânea de Abrantes, Figueiredo Ribeiro Collection, Abrantes; América, Galeria Pedro Alfacinha, Lisbon (2017); Suspension of Disbelief, Centro de Artes Visuais, Coimbra (2016); Mercúrio, Galeria Zé dos Bois, Lisbon (2015); and Japan 1997, Centro Cultural Vila Flor, Guimarães (2013).
