António Júlio Duarte is one of the key names in new photography in Portugal. He began photographing his photography practice in the 1990s, in black and white, and from 2000 he introduced colorcolour into his work. Interested in reality, its the different contexts, geographies, experiences, agents and particularities of reality, the artist first selects the location, studies it in the studio, and then goes there to photograph it, defamiliarizing defamiliarising the referents as we perceive them visually. Another important aspect of this artist's practice is the relationship between photography and seriesserialisation. Although there are references between the photographs in each series as a whole, each photograph still has degrees of autonomy that grow along with the framing, angles or manipulations of colorcolour and light, delimited by the square format of the images.
- Blue Flowers, Box Canyon Road, California, USA
, 2017, was captured at dusk and consists of a view of flowering shrubs in the desert crossed by Box Canyon Road. The approximate plane and 90º displacement of the bushes decontextualizes decontextualises them, making all the elements of the image converge on the immaterial photographic surface itself. The coordinates of the sky and the ground merge together. The blue of the sky extends to the flowers and the blue-gold bushes cover the sky, reminiscent of Cézanne's final paintings. A suggestion of movement is added, introduced by the layers of beaten earth that cut the plane horizontally, while the white light of the flash illuminates the natural scene, giving conferring a sense ofitartificiality.
