Carlos Henrich

Carlos Henrich was born in 1965 in Baden has has Brazilian and German nationalities. He lived in São Paulo until 1982, when he moved to Germany. He studied Mechanical Tooling, with a specialization in plastic injection moulds in Durlach and, between 1985 and 1990, he attended the Painting and Sculpture course at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künst, in Karlsruhe. He visited Portugal and the Alentejo quarries until he established himself in Lisbon, where he now lives and works. He discovered granite, marble and basalt, obtaining various sculptural shapes that became more organic and sensuous with the utilization of new materials, like wood, clay, polyester resin or seeds. He makes sculpture in public spaces, values multidisciplinary work and partnerships. Sound and performance are allied to sculptures, as well as painting which developed in the work of the artist, manifesting narrative interest and eroticism.



He received the 1st sculpture prize at the 5º Salão da Primavera, Galeria de Arte do Casino Estoril e Estoril Sol, 1990; the 3rd EDP prize – Edinfor of Sculpture CYBERSPACE, 1996 and the Best Media Award (Ressonância 7.84 sound sculpture, with Kazine), The New Art Fest’17, MUHNAC, Lisbon, 2017. Some of his most important solo exhibitions are Semente/Seed, 2008 and Noosfera, 2011, gAD – Galeria Antiks Design, Lisbon; O Lobo Sentado [The Sitting Wolf], Travessa da Ermida de Belém, Lisbon, 2015 and Sementes de Luz [Seeds of Light], Convento dos Cardaes, Lisbon, 2019, and the group exhibitions Confrontos, gAD galeria, 2010; Arte Ocupa Lisboa, Paris…e também Hamburgo, São Paulo e Okayama, 2010-14-15; Spectrum, gAD galeria  and Casa/Museu Medeiros e Almeida, Lisbon; São Tomé e Príncipe Biennale in Lisbon, 2012; Trippy Hippy Pastorale, Austria, 2013; DACH Schutzbekleidung, Rastadt, 2018 and Festival Lisboa Soa, 2019. His work is represented in private collections in Germany, Angola, Brazil, Spain, USA, France, Netherlands and Portugal.
