Cristina Ataíde

Cristina Ataíde was born in 1951, in the city of Viseu. She presently lives in Carnaxide and works in Lisbon. She graduated in Sculpture at the then Lisbon Superior School of Fine Arts and, between 1987 and 1996, she was the sculpture and design production director at Madein, Alenquer, where she worked with artists like Anish Kapoor, Michaelangelo Pistolleto, Keit Sonnier, Matt Mulican, among others. Between 1997 and 2012, she was guest teacher at the Lisbon Lusófona University. Her work, often thought out and elaborated while travelling, includes various areas, between sculpture and drawing, photography or video, large scale installations, public sculpture and site-specific. Concerns with nature, its mutability and preservation, are constant themes in her work and research, and she has been exhibiting regularly since 1984. The following solo exhibitions stand out: Ser linha ser, Carmona e Costa Foundation, Lisbon, 2015, Voltar de vez em quando, Travessa da Ermida, Lisbon, 2017, Observadores do céu, Soares dos Reis Museum, Oporto, 2018 and Dar corpo ao vazio, Berardo Collection Museum, Lisbon, 2020. From the numerous group exhibitions, the following should be mentioned: Densidade Relativa [Relative Density], Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, 2005, Laboratório afectos, Quinta das Lágrimas, Coimbra, 2008, Abaixo as fronteiras!, MACE, Elvas, 2016 and Dissonâncias, Coleção MNAC: acquisitions and donations 2010-2020, Contemporary Art National Museum, Lisbon, 2020. Throughout her career, she received various awards and was part of artistic residences such as Global Stone Workshop, Mahabalipuram, India, 2011, Artistic residence at the Esaouira Art Centre, Ifitry, Morroco, 2012, Ethiopia Walkscapes, Hangar Residency, Ethiopia, 2017 or RIZOMA Project, Andrea Rehder Contemporary Art, São Paulo or LABVERDE, Art Immersion Program in the Amazon, Brazil, 2019. The work of Ataíde is represented in numerous collections in Portugal and abroad, such as the Modern Art Collection of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Culturgest, António Cachola Collection, Lisbon City Museum Collection, Collection of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Unión Fenosa, La Coruña, Spain, Collection of the Maison de l’Art Contemporain, Asilah, Maroc, Afro Brazil Museum, São Paulo, Brazil or the Vatican Library, Rome, Italy.
