Grancinda Candeias

Gracinda Candeias was born in Luanda in 1947, and she is the daughter of painter José Marques Candeias. At 18 years old, she moved to Oporto, where she did the General Course of Painting at the Fine Arts School, and she had painter Júlio Resende as teacher, among others. Between 1972 and 1973, she did Painting and Textile courses at the Lisbon Fine Arts Superior School and, in 1973, she was assistant at the National Society of Fine Arts. Between 1986 and 1988, she lived in Paris, as grantee of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and she had Júlio Pomar and Eduardo Luiz as tutors. Her work developed around painting, performance, scenography, fashion and radio, as she did research projects on African prehistoric art or the new image technologies. She had various solo and group exhibitions throughout her career, in various countries, and her first solo exhibition was at Vagão Gallery, in Oporto, in 1969. She was awarded the Painter of the Year Prize, in 1982 and the career award in 1999. Her work is represented in museums, foundations and private collections, both in Portugal and abroad.
