João Paulo Feliciano

João Paulo Feliciano was born in Caldas da Rainha, in 1963. He is a musician and visual artist, graduated in Modern Languages and Literatures by the Lisbon University. Although he started with painting in the 1980’s, he doesn’t have a very linear trajectory, exploring various fields of expression and different artistic forms; however, it is based on his work as visual artist that he has affirmed the essentials of his language. In parallel, we can find in his work installation, objects, painting, drawing, photography, video, light, sound, music, graphic design, architecture, and even performance. He’s been showing his work regularly since 1984 and from his many solo and group exhibitions the following stand out: The Blues Quarter, Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, USA, 2007, The possibility of Everything: João Paulo Feliciano, Selected Works 1989-1994, Culturgest, 2006, Sonic Boom – The Art of Sound, Hayward Gallery, London, 2002, Color Games, Appleton Square, 2007, or, more recently, Ajax et Plures, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Oporto, 2022. In 2004, he participated at the 26th São Paulo Biennial, in Brazil. Feliciano’s work is represented in numerous private and institutional collections, such as the Serralves Foundation or the Modern Art Centre of the Calouse Gulbenkian Foundation.
