Lucia Laguna
Lucia Laguna (1941, Campo de Goytacazes, Brazil) is a painter without academic training, who started her work in painting at 54 years old, after she retired from her career teaching Brazilian, Portuguese and Latin literature.
The common reference in her painting is the view from the windows of her house/studio onto the Mangueira hill, a well-known favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There, Laguna finds a mix of planned architectures, with the cluttered lines and structures of the favela houses, a meeting of diverse planes and textures that inspire the artist to create paintings that, although not narrative, witness the living experience and the gaze of one who paints the world she sees.
She attended several courses at the EAV (Visual Arts School) of Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro, where she studied with other artists like Katie Van Scherpenberg (1940, São Paulo, Brazil), Agnaldo Farias (1955, Itajubá, Brazil) and Fernando Cocchiarale (1952, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil).
Laguna presented her work in relevant art galleries and institutions such as Mercosul Biennale, Porto Alegre, Brazil (2020); São Paulo Assis Chateaubrian Art Museum, São Paulo (2018); Rio Art Museum, Rio de Janeiro (2016); Rio de Janeiro Modern Art Museum; São Paulo Biennale (2013); Instituto Valenciano d’Art Modern, Valencia, Spain (2011); Marcantonio Vilaça Cultural Centre, Brasilia, Brazil (2011); Museum Van Kunst, Antwerp, Belgium (2011); Martin Gropius-Bau Museum, Berlin, Germany (2007). The work of Lucia Laguna is represented in various public collections, namely in Brazil: Golden Arts Investments, Brazil; São Paulo Cultural Centre; Coleção Banco Itaú, São Paulo; Modern Art Museum, Rio de Janeiro; São Paulo Modern Art Museum; Rio Art Museum, Rio de Janeiro; São Paulo Assis Chateubriand Art Museum, São Paulo and Brasilia National Museum, Brazil.
