1978RecifeBrasil

Márcio Vilela (1978, Recife, Brazil) has a degree in Photography from the Escola Superior de Tecnologia de Tomar and he lives and works in Lisbon. He mostly uses photography and occasionally uses video, drawing, artist's books and appropriation of other objects, such as a roll of NASA aerial photographs, for example, multiplying the points of view on the same subject. His work, especially in long course projects such as the Estudo Cromático para o Azul (2011-2015) or Satellites (2014-2019), combines research and experimental actions, such as sending a camera to over 30,000 meters of altitude, processes that are documented and integrated into the work.

In 2008 he stood out as the artist selected for the Anteciparte award, Lisbon, and for the Descubrimientos award at the PhotoEspaña 2009 festival. In 2010 he started a two-year artistic residency at Carpe Diem - Arte e Pesquisa, in Lisbon, which resulted in the exhibition Mono. In 2012 he was selected for Abre Alas 8, in the gallery A Gentil Carioca, in Rio de Janeiro, and participated in an artistic residence on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores, at the invitation of Galeria Fonseca Macedo. This residency resulted, in 2014, in the exhibition Azores and the launch of an artist's book with the same name.  The following year he returned to the archipelago to join the Creative Residences of Pico do Refúgio. At the invitation of the Museum of Modern Art Aloísio Magalhães, he returned in 2014 to his home town for an artistic residence. In 2016, he won a scholarship to the European Master of Fine Art Photography at the IED in Madrid. He presented the exhibition Estudo Cromático para o Azul at the Brasília Art Museum in 2018 and was one of the artists invited to participate in the series Um.Artista in Canal Arte1 Brasil. At MNAC - National Contemporary Art Museum/Museu do Chiado, in Lisbon, he held a solo exhibition entitled Satellites in 2019. He has been a photography teacher since 2007. His works are represented in the António Cachola Collection, Brasília Museum of Art, Aloísio Magalhães Museum of Modern Art, among other private collections.
