Marcos Marepe
Marepe (1970, Santo António de Jesus, Brazil) is the artistic name of Marcos Reis Peixoto. In 1988, he entered the plastic arts course of the Bahia Federal University (UFBA), in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, and in 1991 he started the degree in drawing at the same university. In 1992, he also became a teacher at the Plastic Arts School of the UFBA.
From the 1990’s on, he abandoned sculpture in cement and introduced daily objects in his work, such as rejected or disposable materials. Some examples are the packages of commercial products, cardboard or domestic objects, with which he recreates popular culture narratives of his hometown and Brazil. For some works, the artist encourages the active participation of the public and the approaching of themes related to the construction of the idea of collective memory.
His solo exhibitions include: Pinacoteca of São Paulo, Brazil (2019); São Paulo Museum of Modern Art (2007); Tate Modern, London, United Kingdom (2007); Centre Pompidou, Paris, France (2005); Pampulha Art Museum, Belo Horizonte, Brazil (2005) and PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island, USA (2004). He participated in the São Paulo Biennial (2012, 2006); 15th Biennale of Sydney (2006); 50th Venice Biennale, Italy (2003) and Istanbul Biennale (2003), among others.
His work is represented in various collections, such as the Elipse Foundation, Portugal; Inhotim Centro de Arte Contemporânea, Brazil; Museu de Arte Contemporânea de São Paulo; Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo; Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia; MoMA – Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA; Tate Collection, United Kingdom; Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada and Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, among others.
