Maria Loboda

Maria Loboda (1979, Krakow, Poland) studied Interdisciplinary Art Studies at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Frankfurt am Main, Germany (2003-2008), with Professor Mark Leckey (1964, Wirral, United Kingdom). While studying she was a grantee at the University of New York, USA, between 2007 and 2008.

Loboda explores the symbolic plane of objects by elaborating various narratives about a specific object, or group of objects that, when related to a certain period of time or by association with each other, allow the spectator to question their purpose or meaning. Thus, the artist recreates new interpretations and associations, reorganizing signs and rewriting old symbols that may hide or cause to emerge a mysterious and attractive, or even menacing, essence.

Some of her most important international exhibitions are: Sitting here as bored as a Leopard, CCA Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw, Poland (2019); Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, United Kingdom (2019); Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Germany (2018); Some weep, some blow flutes, Power Plant, Toronto, Canada (2016); Havoc in the heavenly Kingdom, Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland (2017); Camille Henrot: Days are dogs, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France (2017); I am radiant, I am radiant, I am radiant in my defeat, Centre of Contemporary Art, Vilnus, Lithuania (2017); Dead guardian, KunstvereinBraunschweig, Germany (2014); Mudam Luxembourg, Musée d’Art Moderne Gran-Duc Jean, Luxembourg (2014); Puddle, pothole, portal, Sculpture Center, Long Island, USA (2014); Las fieras, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain (2013); I know you, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Ireland (2013); Bielefelder Kunstverein, Germany (2010).

The work of Loboda is represented in various collections all over the world.
