Nuno Cera

1972BejaPortugal

Nuno Cera (1972, Beja, Portugal) graduated in advertising from IADE in 1995 and attended Maumaus - School for Visual Arts, from 1995 to 1997, in Lisbon, where he lives and works. Nuno Cera's photographs and videos explore themes related to architecture and urbanism, combining documentary record with fictional and poetic languages. Through a careful look at today's world and the challenges and contradictions of globalization, Cera builds from his work a complex speech about the city, the spaces, the people, and the tensions between the natural and the artificial. Among other projects, he published the book Cimêncio (Fenda Edições) in 2003, a survey of suburban landscapes conducted in collaboration with architect Diogo Seixas Lopes. Between 2008 and 2010, he carried out the Futureland project, an artistic research on nine metropolises: Istanbul, Cairo, Dubai, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Jakarta, and Bombay. This series records a number of impressions and atmospheres that document the complexity of intense urban growth in these cities.

His work has been published, exhibited, and acclaimed by cultural institutions and national and international platforms. He was nominated for the BES Photo Award in 2004. He was a guest artist in the official Portuguese representation at the Venice Biennale of Architecture Public without rhetoric, 2018, and participated in the 13th Havana Art Biennale, in 2019. He held artist residencies at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, in 2001, on a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation grant; at ISCP - International Studios and Curatorial Program, New York, 2006; at International Artist Residency Récollets, Paris, 2013. He received the Fundación Botin Scholarship, Santander, 2012.  He has had recent solo exhibitions in museums and cultural institutions such as Fundação Oriente (Macau); Grand Palais (Paris); Kunstraum Botschaft (Berlin); CAPC - Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra; MNAC - Museu do Chiado (Lisbon); CCB (Lisbon); Instituto Camões (Luxembourg); and collectives at the Akademie der Künste (Berlin); Ano Zero - Biennial of Contemporary Art of Coimbra; Pinakothek der Moderne (Munich); Modern art Centre - Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon); CCCB (Barcelona); ARCO Expanded Cinema (Madrid); EXIT ART (New York), among others. He is represented in numerous private and institutional collections in various parts of the world.
