André Cepeda

André Cepeda (Coimbra, 1976), a self-taught artist, regularly exhibits his photographic work since 1999, both in Portugal and abroad. His photographs, usually taken with a large format camera, are characterised by a raw look and attention to detail in the urban landscapes and social realities that surround them. Among his first accolades are the projects carried out in 2001 for Porto European Capital of Culture and for the Encontros da Imagem [ImageEncounters], in the city of Braga, having also been nominated for the EDP New Artists Award in 2007.



In 2010, he published the book Ontem (Le caillou bleu), a project started in 2006 with exhibitions at the ZDB Gallery, Lisbon, Espace Photographique Contretype in Brussels and at the Rome Photographic Festival. That year he participated in the group exhibitions Impresiones y Comentários - Fotografia Contemporánea Portuguesa (Fundació Foto Colectania, Barcelona) and Mostra de Vídeo Arte e Fotografia Portuguesa (Art Centre Hélio Oiticica, Rio de Janeiro). He was nominated for the BESPhoto Award 2010 and the Foam Paul Huf Award 2011, Amsterdam. He has held artist residencies at Residency Unlimited, New York, and FAAP, São Paulo.



His first book with Pierre von Kleist, Rien, is published in 2012 and in 2014 he was selected for the European Photo Exhibition Award, with exhibitions in Oslo, Hamburg and Paris. The book Rua Stan Getz, consisting of a series of photographs taken in Brazil, was published by the same publisher in 2015



In 2016, he exhibited at the National Museum of Contemporary Art - Museu do Chiado with Depois and, in 2020, the solo exhibition Ballad of Today was presented by MAAT, both together with a book. Also noteworthy are the solo exhibitions at Benrubi Gallery and Fridman Gallery, New York; Kasseler Fotoforum, Kassel; CAAA and Centro Cultural Vila Flor, Guimarães; and group exhibitions at Argos, Brussels; HKW, Berlin; Serralves Foundation - Museum of Contemporary Art, Oporto; São Paulo Art Museum. He was invited to take photographs for the Portuguese Official Representation at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia 2018 and for the 50th anniversary of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's premises in 2019. His work integrates several art collections, public and private, both in Portugal and abroad.
