Pedro Barateiro
Pedro Barateiro (1979, Almada) is an artist who mostly uses video, photography, drawing, collages, sound and text, sometimes combining them in installations or performances. The appropriation of images and references is one of the main characteristics of his work, in which he often combines fiction with a more documental record, suggesting a critical reflection on the present. He began by attending Maumaus, School of Visual Arts, in Lisbon (2002-2004) and held a Masters in Fine Arts at the Academy of Art in Malmo, University of Lund, Sweden (2005-2006), with a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He was invited to do artistic residencies at the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York (2007-2008), with a grant from FLAD - Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and at the Pavillion - Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2008-2009), among others.
He has been exhibiting regularly in Portugal and abroad since 2003, including solo exhibitions in galleries and museums such as Museu Coleção Berardo, Lisbon; Kettle's Yard, Cambridge; Kunsthalle Basel, Basel; Basement Roma; Redcat, Los Angeles; Casa de Serralves, Serralves Foundation, Porto; Kunsthalle Lissabon and Pavilhão Branco - Museu da Cidade, Lisbon. Among the various group exhibitions in which he participated there are relevant institutions and events, including Sharjah Biennial 13, 29th São Paulo Biennial, 16th Sydney Biennial, 5th Berlin Biennial, SESC Pompeia in São Paulo, Frac Île-de-France - Le plateau in Paris, and Centro Galego de Arte Contemporânea in Santiago de Compostela. His performances have been performed in theatres and institutions such as Centre Pompidou, Théâtre de la Ville, Fondation Ricard and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris; TNDMII and São Luiz Theatre in Lisbon; Rivoli Theatre in Porto; ZHdK, Zurich or 98Weeks, Beirut. He edited the books ACTIVITY (JRP Ringier/Christoph Keller, 2011) and Temporary Collaborations (Galeria Pedro Cera, 2008), in collaboration with Ricardo Valentim.
His work integrates important collections, namely "la Caixa" Foundation and ARCO Foundation, Spain; Deutsche Bank Collection, Germany; MHKA - Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen, Belgium; and in Portugal, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation - Modern Art Centre; Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art; Novo Banco Collection; EDP Foundation Art Collection; PLMJ Foundation; among other private collections in Portugal and abroad.
