Jorge Barradas (1894-1971) began his studies in painting at the School of Fine Arts, which he did not complete, assuming his condition of self-taught artist. He developed his painting and drawing skills in cabarets, theatres and cafés in the Portuguese capital, producing mainly caricature and illustrations for periodicals and magazines such as - ABC
, - Contemporânea
, - Eva
or - Ilustração Portuguesa
. Alongside the cosmopolitan and bohemian themes represented on the covers of these publications, the painter updates the image of Portuguese women in their different roles. In addition to the provocative - garçonne
who frequented nightclubs, laundresses, milkmaids, - varinas
(fish sellers), and vendors were included in Barradas' lexicon of female representation. The aesthetic of the picturesque is recovered with these popular characters, taking on a new visuality through the graphic approach of illustration.

A good example is this gouache where we see a water-woman represented with her apron, slippers, headscarf, shawl and pitcher, all elements of an iconography that identifies this social class and trade. Contrary to the production of the following decades, characterized by a restrained modernism, present in the drawing and painting of these gender figures, this composition becomes interesting for its illustrative character, closer to caricature. In this rendering of the typical, Barradas uses a graphic synthesis, which implies, however, a careful attention to detail, taking advantage of patterns and textures in a decorative way.
