With a motionless and serene posture a white deer appears represented, a sculpture in painted bronze, by Portuguese artist Miguel Branco. Almost like an apparition, much larger than the real dimension, - Untitled (White Deer)
, from 2016, presents a single figure reclined on a massive rectangular plinth, but despite being perfectly static it seems simultaneously alert, becoming mysterious and challenging.
The pose, the whitness, the simplification of the forms and volumes not only reinforce a certain classic character as they also reveal the confluence of various formal references from art and sculpture history, from the Egyptian or roman art, to the gothic or neo-classic art, a recurring characteristic in Branco's work. On the other hand, the scale of the piece denaturalizes the represented animal and renders unusual its imposing presence which, amidst the references of the historical past, natural history and popular culture, reveals a hybrid body.
The enigmatic character of the sculpture provides greater opening to questioning on the part of the spectator, which may lead, in certain cases, to a strangeness or even fascination. Time, an important aspect in the artist's work, is once again very much present in that common place where the status of the image and its surprising character are questioned.
