André Romão

André Romão was born in Lisbon, in 1984, a city where he presently lives and works. With a degree by the Fine Arts Faculty of the Lisbon University, in 2007, he also attended the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan, in 2006. His work is centred in sculpture and poetry, combining elements or objects of different natures, exploring the inherent dialogue and metamorphosis. History and violence are recurring themes, questioning the interactions between the human body, cultural narratives and environmental processes. The appropriation or convocation of references from different historic periods, from Classic Antiquity to the Baroque, including Surrealism, are one of the defining traits of his works.

He has had many exhibitions since 2006. He received the EDP New Artists prize, in 2007 and the BES revelation prize, in 2013. He participated in artistic residences in institutions such as the Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin, 2009), MACRO – Museo d’Arte Contemporanea (Rome, 2014) or Gasworks (London, 2010). Some of his recent solo exhibitions include: Fauna, Museu Berardo, 2019, Lisbon, accompanied by a catalogue published by the Hatje Cantz Publishers, as well as exhibitions at BoCA Biennial (Braga), Museo Burel (Belluno), Vera Cortês Gallery (Lisbon), Garcia Galeria (Madrid), NoguerasBlanchard (Barcelona), Galleria Umberto Di Marino (Naples), Kunstraum Botschaft (Berlin), Middelheim Museum (Antwerp), Kunsthalle Lissabon, among others.

Collezione Agovino”, Chiesa del Purgatorio (Matera) or “Specific Objects – Works from the Figueiredo Ribeiro Collection, Part 1” at the Museu Ibérico de Arqueologia e Arte of Abrantes; MAAT, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon), CentroCentro (Madrid), FUTURA (Prague), CAPC musée d’art contemporain (Bordeaux), Astrup Fearnley Museet (Oslo), Serralves Museum (Oporto), Centro de Arte Oliva (São João da Madeira), PhotoCairo 5, Spike Island Art Center (Bristol).
