Pedro Proença

Pedro Proença was born in 1962 in the city of Lubango, in Angola. He presently lives and works in Lisbon. He very early acquired an interest in drawing, which led him to study at the National Society of Fine Arts in Lisbon and to complete de degree in Painting at the Lisbon Faculty of Fine Arts, in 1986. During the course, he created the project of the “Homeostética” magazine, from which the Homoestético group was formed, made up of various other artists, such as Manuel João Vieira, Pedro Portugal, Ivo and Xana. The first exhibition of the group was in 1983.



Besides painting, he also dedicated himself to illustration and books publication on poetry, fiction and essays. He’s been showing his work regularly since 1981, his first solo exhibition was in 1984, at Casa de Bocage, in Setúbal. To be noted, Big girls don’t cry, Pedro Oliveira Gallery, Porto da Interpretação, Adhoc Gallery, Vigo, 1996 and other group exhibitions, such as 11 years later, E.S.B.A.L, Lisbon, 1983 or Drawing towards a distant shore, The drawing Center, New York, 1994.



Pedro Proença has won several prizes, such as União Latina, in 1992, and his work is represented in various public and private collections such as the Serralves Foundation, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation or Museu Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, in Madrid.
