T. J. Wilcox

T. J. Wilcox was born in 1965 in Seattle. He lives and works in New York. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts, in New York, in 1989 and completed his Master’s degree at the Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, in 1995.

His practice is focused on film, video, photography and mixed media on paper and based on the hiper mediatized culture he develops personal narratives that, without ever coming to a close, oscillate between facts, myths, memories, associations and the overload of visual information. With a strategy in which fiction and reality, biography and general history are intertwined, Wilcox gives back disturbing, tragic, decadent and romantic portraits of the life of celebrities, historic figures and close friends, using techniques of appropriation, collage and image degradation.

Some of his most important solo exhibitions include the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, 1998; Smorgasbord, MATRIX 198, UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Berkely, 2002; A Fair Tale & Garland One, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 2007 and T.
