The paintings of Yu Nishimura (b. 1982, Kanagawa, Japan) glide between reality and intuition, capturing everyday gestures that oscillate between the visible and the fleeting. In his practice, figures seem to emerge and dissolve in the very act of painting, in a play of transparencies that disorients any fixed notion of time or place. Using a soft palette and fluid brushstrokes, Nishimura evokes a space where perception is diluted and materiality merges with the atmosphere. His compositions suggest a distant echo of the Japanese pictorial tradition, filtered through a contemporary sensibility that values the unfinished and the imprecise. The characters that populate his canvases, often absorbed in their own world, do not offer themselves fully to the gaze; they are ephemeral presences, traversed by a poetics of the unspeakable. In this suspension, Nishimura insinuates a profound emotional truth, a loneliness that is not absence, but rather a state of silent communion with space, light, and memory.
