Assuming the referential legacy of the tradition and history of painting, José Loureiro has been developing diversified artistic research, detached from a rigid and pre-established programmatic purpose. As a result, his reflection on the means of systematic organisation of the representation space is materialised in works that, although part of the same pictorial system, reveal great heterogeneity of formal and conceptual solutions.
Created in 2013, Untitled - like much of his geometric abstraction work - gravitates around a basic element, the rectangle, whose shape repeats and declines on three distinct levels: the black one that almost covers the entire support, in a static and stable position; the white, of which only a section can be glimpsed and whose angle seems to suggest perspective and movement in space; and the curved and stretched red one that is embedded in the white space, and which is no longer a rectangle although its original shape can still be perceived. The correlation between the various elements seems to correspond to a hierarchy and an order of formal submission that is, to some extent, balanced by the chromatic scheme. The dominant black acts as a catalyst for the white area, giving it a particular luminosity; in turn, the white exerts the same effect on the red, a kind of halo that shapes itself to the limits of the white trapezoid, animating the composition.
Resorting to basic elements that are never mere forms devoid of content and expression, José Loureiro develops in this composition his reflection on the possibility of pure painting, researching issues of rhythm, dynamic balance, optical tension and oscillation, spatial vibration - in short, the harmonic variability of the pictorial components.
