This project is set against the backdrop of my recurring source of inspiration. Once again, it is the sea off the south-western coast of mainland Portugal, the Costa Vicentina, the cliffs, and the elements that shape and sculpt them. The force, the delicacy and the splashes of time… eternally, time. “I Fish, Therefore I Am” began to take shape even before I started photographing it; it is a lifelong project, imbued with the essence of a lifetime.

BIO João Mariano

Since the late 1990s, he has been developing a series of projects in southern Portugal, mainly on the Costa Vicentina. Like Bill Brandt, Mariano sees the photography book as the ultimate expression of his work. He is CEO and art director of the agency 1000olhos – Imagem e Comunicação, which he co-founded with his wife in Aljezur in 2001. A perfectionist in his work, his hobbies include angling and mountain biking. He lives and works between Aljezur and Lisbon.
