The artist’s starting point for the project Books for an Unwritten History is the international movement Fridays for Future (FFF), founded by Greta Thunberg in 2018. Thunberg herself delivers messages that may seem obvious, but which are not applied in the politics of the many countries that continue to lead us towards the total destruction of the natural environment. The artist has taken some of the slogans used in the FFF protests and decontextualised them, turning them into book titles of a history still to be written. A history imbued with hope and essentially about the future: “Act Now”, “Climate Justice”, “Time is Up”, “Climate Actions”, “Today we Rise”, “We cannot continue to ignore this”, “Respect Existence or Expect Resistance”, “Earth is on Fire”, “Wake up!”, “Science not Silence”, “It Is Our Turn Now”, “Planet Over Profit”, “Coal Kills” and “The End”. With this artwork, Sala speaks to us about climate justice with messages that relate to the future: “No Future without Nature” and “Save the Future”. Through a critical analysis, he proposes a new role for these slogans, analysing the global dimension of environmental conflicts through the visual arts.
